Why are documentary baselines so easy to beat?
Because there are so few videos in them. A channel publishing a few times a year has a median built from a small sample, so one release that found its audience can post a large multiplier without representing a change in trajectory. Look for channels with several qualifying videos before drawing conclusions.
Does length hurt a documentary's chances?
Less than an unclear stake does. Long videos succeed regularly here because the audience arrives expecting to commit. What sinks them is a thumbnail and title that cannot say who this is about and what went wrong, at which point runtime becomes the excuse a viewer uses to leave.
Can I make documentaries without archive footage or a travel budget?
Many rows on this list suggest yes. Interviews, documents, screen recordings, maps and narration carry a surprising amount of weight when the story is strong, and the constraint often forces a tighter edit.
