How many tags can you put on a YouTube video?
YouTube doesn't limit the number of tags. It limits their combined length: the Tags field holds 500 characters. Google's YouTube Data API documentation spells out how that is counted. The commas between tags count toward the limit, and a tag that contains a space is counted as if it were wrapped in quotation marks, so every multi-word tag costs two extra characters.
This generator's counter includes both the commas and those quotation marks, so the number it shows is the number YouTube Studio will count. Most of the tags it suggests are two or more words, which is why a list of 25 tags can run out of room faster than you'd expect.
Do YouTube tags still matter?
Less than most people think. YouTube's help center says tags play a minimal role in a video's discovery and are mainly useful when the content of your video is commonly misspelled. It calls your title, thumbnail and description the more important pieces of metadata.
That makes tags a two-minute job, not a research project. A sensible list covers:
- Your main topic, written the way a viewer would search for it
- Other names people use for the same thing
- Common misspellings of names, brands or places in the video
- One or two broader terms for the category the video belongs to
What this tag generator does, and what it doesn't
It's a template tool, not a keyword database. It pairs your topic with common search patterns such as how to, tutorial, for beginners, tips, review, explained and a year tag. For topics of more than one word it also adds the individual words, adjacent word pairs and the phrase reversed. Nothing is looked up online and no AI is involved, so the same topic always produces the same list.
Because the patterns are generic, some tags won't match your video. A tutorial doesn't need 'review', and a review doesn't need 'challenge'. Switching those off keeps the list relevant to what the viewer will actually see.
