How to use it

How to use the YouTube Description Generator

  1. Add your title and key points

Type the video title, then two or three things the video covers, one per line.

  2. Add links and chapters

Paste your links one per line, each with a short label. If the video has chapters, paste them too, one mm:ss title per line. The tool checks them against YouTube's chapter rules.

  3. Pick a call to action

Choose Subscribe, Ask for comments, Like + Subscribe, Watch next or Newsletter. The last two include a [bracketed] spot for your own link, and the tool reminds you to fill it in.

  4. Copy, paste and finish

Copy the description into YouTube Studio. There's no placeholder text to delete except a [bracketed] link spot, which the tool flags if it's still there.

How long can a YouTube description be?

Up to 5,000 characters. YouTube Studio lists that limit in its video settings, and descriptions can't include invalid characters. Google's YouTube Data API documentation names the angle brackets < and > as the characters that aren't allowed.

You rarely need all 5,000. The counter on this page turns red past the limit and disables the copy button, so a description you copy from here always fits.

What to put in a YouTube description

YouTube's own tips treat a description as two parts: what viewers see before they click Show more (or more on mobile), and everything after. Use the first few lines to describe the video, because that is what people read first. Channel information, extra links and credits can go further down.

YouTube also recommends a unique description for every video, with your one or two main keywords featured in both the description and the title. Its search matches search terms against the text of your description, so plainly describing what the video covers helps the right viewers find it.

How this generator lays out a description

It's a fill-in template, not an AI writer. Your words go in, and the layout is always the same:

  • An opening line built from your title, so the top of the description says what the video is
  • An 'In this video' list made from your key points
  • A CHAPTERS section, only when you add chapters, with the times tidied into one format
  • A LINKS & RESOURCES section, if you added links
  • The call to action you picked
  • Up to three hashtags made from the first meaningful words of your title

Edit before you publish

The opening line is a generic sentence, so rewrite it in your own voice if you can. Chapters only switch on once there are at least three timestamps, starting at 00:00 and each at least 10 seconds apart. The generator warns you when a list you paste breaks one of those rules, and leaves the chapters section out entirely when you don't add any.

A few more things

Good questions. Clear answers.

What is the character limit for a YouTube description?

5,000 characters. The angle brackets < and > aren't allowed.

What part of the description do viewers see first?

Only the first few lines, before they click Show more. YouTube recommends using them to describe the video, which is why this generator puts a summary line from your title at the top.

Why aren't the links in my YouTube description clickable?

According to Google's YouTube Data API documentation, URLs in a description only render as clickable links when the channel meets platform-level requirements, such as channel verification or having advanced features enabled.

Does this description generator use AI?

No. It arranges your own title, points, links and call to action into a fixed layout in your browser. Nothing is sent to a model or to Vidfora's servers.

How do I add chapters to a YouTube description?

List timestamps with a title on each line, starting at 00:00, with at least three in ascending order and each chapter at least 10 seconds long. The Timestamp Generator checks and formats the list for you.

Should I put hashtags in my description?

You can. YouTube shows up to three hashtags from your description by the video title. This generator adds up to three, made from the first meaningful words in your title.
